Wonderwoods winner BREEAM Climate Resilience Excellence Award 2026

Wonderwoods in Utrecht has won the Climate Resilience Excellence award, recognising its integrated response to the growing impact of climate change in a dense urban environment. The building combines nature-based design, smart water management and long-term ecological stewardship to reduce vulnerability to heat, heavy rainfall and drought, while also supporting biodiversity.

Nature-based cooling and biodiversity
An extensive green landscape is incorporated throughout the façades, terraces, roof gardens and interior spaces. With approximately 300 trees and 75,000 plants, Wonderwoods creates cooler microclimates and provides natural shading, helping to reduce heat stress and improve comfort for residents, office users and visitors. The planting also strengthens urban biodiversity, using species selected to withstand the conditions of a high-rise environment.

Smart water management
Water is another essential part of the building’s climate-resilient design. Rainwater is captured by roof gardens, planters and hanging baskets, then buffered and stored for reuse in irrigation. This reduces peak runoff during periods of heavy rainfall and helps keep the vegetation healthy during prolonged dry spells. More than 100 moisture sensors support demand-driven irrigation, ensuring that water is used efficiently and supplied where it is needed most.
